Chapter Twelve
John missed seeing his uncle in Rushton by one day. And, as he was a far less forceful character than Sir Percy and unwise to the way people exchanged money for information, he failed to ascertain various pertinent facts that could have led him to uncover the identity of the young lady he had so admired.
That his uncle had discovered these facts was something he was not to find out for several weeks, by which time he had resolutely put the entire episode to the back of his mind.
However, his immediate despondency over his failure in Rushton caused him to down several large brandies on the way back to Oxford. And when he ran into Mark Andrews, an old acquaintance, in the quadrangle of Merton, he could not help but tell his crony of his recent frustrating experiences.
His dealings with his uncle, although not uppermost in his mind, had to be described in full. And once he finished with that, there was the accident to recount and the young lady he had met. His exaggeration of certain points of her character only served to fuel his own infatuation with the Unknown.
Mark listened with an increasing sense of boredom to the befuddled ramblings of his drunken friend. He was not a man known for his patience. Yet, when John began to describe the horses that had been involved in the accident it took him a mere two seconds to identify them as those belonging to Frobisher and his interest in the story suddenly became acute.
âThe young ladyâ¦â he interrupted casually, âhave you any idea who she might be?â
âI would pay handsomely for any information that would lead me to her front door,â John returned. âAn innocent who has set my heart afire.â Then, shrugging his shoulders, he nodded affably before lurching off to his rooms.
He had no idea of the excitement his tale had stirred within his friend, or of the dire consequences his drunken confidences would have on the young lady he had fallen in love with.

Mark Andrewsâs scholarly appearance belied his true nature. He was by far the oldest student at Oxford and his sole purpose in remaining there was to milk greenhorns, like John Redford, for his own unsavory gains. His was an unpleasant character. He was indifferent to the suffering he caused other people and thought nothing of using friends and family to further his own ambitions.
Both he and his cousin Sonja Andrews had, until recently, been enjoying a highly inflated style of living at the unwitting expense of Frobisher. Indeed, much to Markâs eternal regret, he could still have been enjoying this if he hadnât become greedy and consequently careless.
The ploy he had used to persuade his cousin to become party to his money-making scheme, was to promise her access to tremendous wealth. Frobisherâs wealth to be exact. All she had to do was engage Ianâs affections and become his mistress. Her avaricious nature was roused, and she agreed to help him.
Her exquisite looks alone
